Hi I'm Elma

I'm a Mormon. I'm a great great grandmother and I'm happy!

About Me

I am 92 years old. I grew up in Los Angeles where my father was one of the first motorcycle police officers. I love the accordion and performed professionally earning a great living. I was in Hollywood during it's glamour days of the 1920s and 30s. I met and married my husband Hank while in California working in the music industry. He too was a professional accordionist. When the marriage ended I raised 6 children as a single mom and became a successful business woman running a music store in Arizona. All six of my children learned to play the accordion giving us four family generations of accordionists as my father in law and my grandmother also played accordion. I have written extensively, traveled and lectured about the importance of family, time management and organizational skills. I was also politically involved running for office, being elected and serving in my community. Though my 92 years have been busy and full of responsibility my first priority was always my family.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I was born a member of the church, religion was never a part of my upbringing. I do remember however, that I was taught to pray when I was 2 years old. When my husband was inducted into the army during World War II, I was left alone. It was during this period I began to pray earnestly and search for meaning in my life. I began attending church and reading the Bible and Book of Mormon. I would read, I would pray, and then I would cry with joy. I felt like I had been dying of thirst and had finally been given a drink of water. Jesus Christ became the center of my exsistence. Since that time I have never felt alone. When my husband left, I had 6 children to care for and a business to run. I was scared to death. I knew nothing about running a business and was frightened to be alone. Do you know who helped me? Jesus Christ! I would wake in the morning at 3 AM go down to my business with a prayer in my heart. I would come home to get my children off to school before going back to work. I would then return home to be there when they returned. I know that without my testimony of the gospel, Jesus Christ and the strength and comfort of the Holy Ghost I never would have been able to make it. Besides the spiritual strengthen I have received by being a member of the Mormon church I have also received physical well being. When I lived in California I became interested in health. I ate lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. I was thrilled when I learned about the Word of Wisdom which recommends the type of diet that had already worked out best for me. I have lived the Word of Wisdom all my adult life. Because of my obedience to this law I have been blessed with good health. I am now 92 years old and don't have an ache or a pain. I can see, hear, taste, smell and feel. I feel alive in every facet if my being; spiritually, mentally & physically. The Lord has been good to me! How I love my Savior!

How I live my faith

At my age I am at home most of the time. I read my scriptures and pray several times daily. I call widows and others who may be lonely to check on their well being and cheer them up. I keep my home open to my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren giving them a place to play and feel of my love. I bear my testimony of the Savior and his love to all I come in contact with.
