Hi I'm Jon

I teach mathematics. I love to play board games. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married and have a sweet daughter who we adopted as a baby. My family brings me such joy. I love to spend time with them and with friends. One of the things I like to do most with them is play board games. I have close to 200 games and I like playing because it something to do together that is fun and interactive. Of course I also like to win. I am a mathematics professor. I love to teach, particularly those who have fallen behind or those who also want to be teachers. I've had a little experience with kindergarten, 5th grade, and high school, but the college-level seemed to be the best fit for me.

Why I am a Mormon

I could simply say that my parents were faithful members and taught me well and that is why I am a Mormon. However, I have learned through my own experience that this gospel is the only source of true happiness and peace in this life. I had to discover this for myself during my late teen years and early twenties. I had made some poor decisions and let myself drift away. Did I truly believe and want to continue in the same path as my fmaily? Umltimately it was the treasured realtionships with my family that prompter me to truly investigate and learn that the plan of salvation is true and a great gift. The atonement of Jesus Christ helped me get back on track after those few years of rebellion and now I can say I have my own firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Book of Mormon. I have recently been through one of the most difficult trials of my life - surviving cancer. I can testify that I was only able to do this because my Savior Jesus Christ upheld me through it. He loves me and has restored his gospel and church on the Earth today to show me the way back to him. The blessing of the temple have been such a comfort through my life and particularly the last few years. To know that my family can be eternal is priceless. That knowledge helped me through the emotional turmoil of cancer. It was such a great blessing to take my precious daughter to the temple to have her sealed to us for eternity. So my testimony can be simply stated as: Christ can help me find true peace and families can be together forever.

How I live my faith

I serve in the church as the leader of the men in the priesthood that are 18 years old to around 50 years old. I make sure we have good lessons and discussions in our meetings together each Sunday. I also organize these good brothers in pairs to go and visit the other church members in our area. This is called home teaching and helps to know that our members are having their needs met. I myself take a new member of the church with me as a companion and visit several families. We teach a lesson once a month and I help with things like cleaning out rain gutters for an elderly woman. I also recently planned a few activities for the whole church group. We had a fall picnic at a local park. I organized the food (some delicious barbque prepared by a member who owns a restaraunt) and some activites and we just enjoyed being together for the evening. We also had a service project where we volunteered to rake leaves for those in the community who couldn't do it for themselves. None of these families were members of our church but we love to serve in the community.
