Hi I'm Troy

I'm one of 5 boys, a college student, and from Gilbert, AZ. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a recent college grad and I'm working in the medical field hoping to attend medical school. My favorite part of my undergrad experience has been serving as a teachers assistant in the human anatomy and dissection courses. The human body is one of God's most incredible creations. I feel a great amount of gratitude and reverence to the people who have selflessly given of their bodies to give students like me such a great opportunity. I am the middle of 5 kids, all boys. I've been blessed with great parents and amazing brothers. My mom works as a counselor/therapist for family's affected by addictions. My Dad is a Veterinarian. I grew up working at his clinic for many years and learned how to be a diligent worker by seeing his example. My brothers are my best friends. I served as a missionary for the church in New York City. It was a great experience putting my goals and education aside for those two years to focus on serving other people. My love for my fellow man blossomed during those years. My favorite hobbies include bicycle touring and scuba diving. I've always dreamed of working on a scuba boat or riding my bike across the US.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a family that was actively involved in the gospel. I have loved having the church in my life. I am a Mormon. It is part of who I am, and it influences how I see the world. I continue to be a faithful member of the church because I believe the gospel of Jesus Christ has the ability to transform me into a better person and because I love the church. I realize that like a hospital is a place for the sick, the church is a place for imperfect people like me to try to serve God and grow. I value the covenants I have made to serve God. The church provides a place for me to strive to fulfill the great commands to love God and love my fellow man. I see God's hand in the lives of people throughout the world. I see it guiding me in my religion. I love learning from many of the great world religions, but the Mormon church is my home. I find peace here.

How I live my faith

I try to follow the example of Jesus Christ by loving my brothers and sisters. Above all I hope I can be charitable and love those around me. I try to grow spiritually through study and developing a relationship with the divine. I try to live true to the feelings in my heart that I believe come from God. I try to keep my heart open so I can continue to learn and grow. I wish to close no doors that God has set before me. Anything that I think is good or comes from God I want in my life, no matter where it may come from.

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

Troy
Why is the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism? Its a nick-name that has stuck over the years. In addition to the Bible, Mormons include the Book of Mormon as holy scripture. Mormon was a prophet of God who lived on the american continent around 400 BCE. He compiled the writings of many other ancient prophets who lived on the american contintent. The people in the Book of Mormon are descendants of the House of Isreal. They are some of the other sheep the resurrected Lord said he would visit. The Book of Mormon contains an account of that visit. Show more Show less

Who was Joseph Smith?

Troy
Joseph Smith is the founder of the Mormon church. He lived in the early 1800's and as a young teenager was worried about his salvation. Every denomination seemed to preach their own interpretation of the Bible. Unable to find a satisfactory answer among those denominations, Joseph decided to do as the scriptures suggest, and ask God what he should do. What happened as a result is often referred to by members of the church as The First Vision. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and instructed him that their church was not yet found on the earth in its fullness. He was to be an instrument in restoring Christ's church to the earth. One of his early experiences involved translating the Book of Mormon. Not only does the Book of Mormon provide teachings about Christ, it also serves as a testimony that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. The Book of Mormon was not translated in the conventional manner. Instead, it was translated by the gift and power of God. Thus it stands as one of the fruits of Josephs work. Jesus taught that when discerning true prophets from false prophets, it is by their fruits that we shall know whether they are actually called of God. The Book of Mormon can be used as a tool to discover if Joseph Smith was a true prophet. All are invited to read and pray about the book. If done with faith and real intent, the Lord will answer the prayers of the honest of heart and testify to them the of its truthfulness. He received revelation important for the restoration of lost truths and for the organization the church. These revelations are also part of the Mormon cannon and are called The Doctrine and Covenants. Show more Show less
