Hi I'm Matt

I grew up in Arizona, the 2nd of 5 kids. I'm a graduate student and researcher, I'm a musician and a dancer, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a graduate student studying nanoscience right now. I've got about a million things to be doing at any one time, but my favorite is always to take a few minutes and sit down to play the piano. Music is a huge part of my life. If I had all the money in the world, I would travel. I love to go new places, meet new people, and have my eyes opened to just how big and beautiful the world is. I think that there are some emotions and experiences which you can only have when you are far, far away from home. I didn't have a perfect life growing up and I am still far from perfect, but there are so many good things in my life, that I am often constantly bubbling over with happiness. Life is such an adventure, and I am surprised time and again at how the strangest of situations can combine in the most fun ways. My family means the world to me. I have more fun and feel like I belong most when I am at home. I know that no matter where I go and what life brings me, I have a family that loves me and I can always feel safe with them.

Why I am a Mormon

It's really easy to get swept away in the current of what the world is doing. There's always someone or something clamoring for my attention. I live my faith and it's my foundation. Whenever I have that feeling of confusion or being lost, I find comfort in knowing that God loves me and that He knows me. Life isn't easy, but I know that surrounding myself with other Mormons who share my values and standards will give me the strength to be true to the things that I know. Prayer is one of the core ideas that I focus on. I've more or less always known that God is there, but it wasn't until I decided to seek Him and try to actually communicate with Him for real that I actually began developing a relationship with Him. Through countless experiences, I've learned that God does hear and answer my prayers.

How I live my faith

My faith plays a major role in my life. I've devoted Sundays to God. For me, that includes not only going to church every Sunday, but also spending time studying His word and being together with my family. I was asked last year to help lead the student council for the LDS institute of religion at my university. It's been such an exciting adventure to get to meet all kinds of wonderful students and help plan the activities which we hope will strengthen them in their faith and keep them motivated to follow Jesus Christ. My faith often comes up in conversations with friends and classmates. It's not that I don't have anything else to talk about, I love to talk! I just know that my faith plays such a large role in my life that it has application really in all that I do.

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Matt
For me, a testimony is really just an expression of who I am. All of the experiences that I've had so far in life add up to make me who I am- both in my religion as well as my personal life. When I talk about my testimony, I share how those experiences have affected me and what they mean to me. Most important to me is my conviction that God lives and that He cares about me personally.
