Hi I'm Joe

I'm a husband, a father, a software engineering student, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have lots of interests; coding, football, cricket, rugby (most sports in fact), music, languages, board games, films. Pretty standard stuff really. My lovely wife and I have two small children who have added a lot of joy to what we already had before they came along. I'm studying software engineering at university and that's a lot of fun too. I feel that God has been really good to me in what He has blessed me with, and in helping me to overcome several challenges in my life, which makes me love Him more.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church, but that has nothing to do with my current relationship with God. I made some silly choices when I was younger which were contrary to what I had been taught was correct and as these individual choices turned into patterns of behaviour I became despondent about my relationship with God. My decision to start living as I knew all along that I should, crucially coupled with the cleansing power of Jesus Christ, brought me peace of conscience and started me on a path that has so far led to hope, joy and rejoicing in the love I now know God has for me and my family, and in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I remain a Mormon, and strive to be a "good" Mormon, because I know from experience that my life would be empty without the Lord's Church in it.

How I live my faith

I go to Church each week and help some of our local leaders to complete their assignments. I lead discussions in gospel classes occasionally, where I try to help people find out, or just remind them, how good and loving our Heavenly Father is. I don't have all the answers, but I hope that in my efforts I can learn for myself and, God willing, play some part in enabling others to discover the joy of the gospel of Jesus Christ as it applies to their own personal circumstances.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Joe
My understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ is that it was the means through which He reaches out to us to comfort us in our pains and afflictions, and to save us from our sins. He was mortal through His mother, Mary, and as he was the only sinless mortal to walk the earth, He was the only One who could pay the price required by justice as the consequences of our sins. When we sin, we suffer spiritually, and it is this spiritual suffering which the Atonement has the power take away on conditions of repentance; when it is taken away our hearts are cleansed and purified. In addition to enabling Him to pay the price for our sins, His sinless life meant that He was able to overcome death; it is because of His resurrection, and also through the power of redemption which He possesses, that we will be resurrected.
