Hi I'm Katy

I'm an avid car-singer. I'm a huge fan of live theater. I'm always up for jet skiing. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love learning! I'm about to graduate with my master's in Information Systems, and it's been a difficult but really enjoyable ride. My hobbies and interests include hiking and camping, almost anything out on the water, going to musicals, getting lost on road trips, and anything even remotely goofy. I toggle between making my friends feel really special or really awkward.

Why I am a Mormon

There are at least a million reasons I could share about why I'm a Mormon, but I'll try to keep it short and sweet. The biggest reason why I'm a Mormon today and always will be is because of an experience I had when I was 14 years old. I was pretty lost at that point in my life and had a hard time sincerely feeling love for anyone, including God and especially myself. During the course of 8th grade, I made a HUGE mistake in my life that really hurt the family of one of my friends. After the incident, I sat down with my friend's mom and, with deep regret for what I had done, offered a fairly pathetic apology, believing she wouldn't be willing or able to forgive me. But to my astonishment, she did. Just like that, she let it all go and forgave me. And I'm not talking lip-service here: she truly forgave me for the horrible things I had done to her and her family. She gave no conditions or stipulations, but rather encouraged me to turn things around for myself, telling me she wanted me to have a bright future. I had never experienced something like that before, and it absolutely pierced me to my soul. I was in disbelief that anyone could not only forgive the sins I had committed, but still care about me in light of it all. I didn't sleep well for weeks after this, and eventually decided that, for the first time in my life, I was going to pray to figure out if God was real and if He could forgive me the way this woman had so readily forgiven me. Long story short, He did, and He still does whenever I ask Him for forgiveness. This is why I follow Him. He lights my path before me and gives me hope for the future. He loves me unconditionally, and He loves you unconditionally, too.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by trying to be a good friend. One of the most important aspects of the Savior's life on this earth was His willingness to friendship everyone He came into contact with. You can't really do anything meaningful for another person if you don't really love them.

What is being a Mormon like?

Honestly, being Mormon is great. The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us to love others, serve without condition, and be a friend to the friendless, and I love that the Mormon church emphasizes those teachings (and all of Christ's teachings) so devotedly. Being Mormon helps me figure out how to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in real life situations, with all of the discomfort, sadness, and general messiness that real life brings. Life can be really painful sometimes, and being a member of the Mormon Church doesn't protect us from all pain. But it does give meaning to my pain. I'm becoming like Christ in that I'm learning to be more compassionate toward other people who also struggle, just like me. Show more Show less
