Hi I'm Steve

I'm a Mormon. I'm a husband. I'm a CPA. I blog at mormonwookiee.com.

About Me

I grew up as a Mormon with my wonderful parents and three siblings. When I turned 19, I went on a mission, where I learned to teach the gospel in Spanish. While on my mission, my lung collapsed due to a condition known as spontaneous pneumothorax. After having surgery, I finished my mission at the Family History Library. As a result of this experience, I now have a great love of genealogy work. Since that time, I met and married my wonderful wife, graduated from college, and now work as an accountant for a small software company. I love to read, draw, and watch basketball (Go Jazz!).

Why I am a Mormon

Although I grew up as a Mormon, my faith in the Church goes beyond my family heritage. As a child, my parents made living the gospel a top priority in our home, with family prayer and scripture study as daily activities. As a teenager I had an amazing group of friends, all of whom had strong testimonies which they showed through their everyday actions. Because of these friends, my own faith grew and I gained a strong love for the Savior and wanted to be more like Him. When my lung collapsed on my mission and I needed to return home, it was a difficult experience for me, especially as all of my friends were still on their missions around the world. I wondered, "What have I done to deserve this?" and "Why did this have to happen to me?". However, despite the difficulty, this experience gave me an opportunity to grow closer to the Savior, because I knew that He understood exactly what I was feeling and was always there for me. With all of my heart, I now know that He lives. I know that He suffered not only for our sins, but also for all of our pain and heartache. I know that He knows what is best for us, even when we cannot see it for ourselves. Most of all, I know that He loves us all more than we can ever imagine.

How I live my faith

One thing that I have learned is that we need to make a daily decision to keep the commandments, because temptation is all around us and confronts us every day. A few years ago during General Conference, I felt inspired to start my own blog (www.mormonwookiee.com) after listening to a talk given by Elder Ian S. Ardern. In his talk, Elder Ardern said, "I know our greatest happiness comes as we tune in to the Lord (see Alma 37:37) and to those things which bring a lasting reward, rather than mindlessly tuning in to countless hours of status updates, Internet farming, and catapulting angry birds at concrete walls. I urge each of us to take those things which rob us of precious time and determine to be their master, rather than allowing them through their addictive nature to be the master of us." Elder Ardern's message hit me personally and deeply, and I felt a very strong desire to spread the gospel, but in a humorous way befitting my personality (since I love both the gospel and Star Wars!). Hopefully, my blog has been able to make a difference in someone else's life.
