Hi I'm Beth

I'm a mom, I'm a gamer, I'm a geek, I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a stay-at-home mom of 3, but that's not all I am. I got my BA in 2004, graduating with a double Major in Linguistics and Near Eastern Studies. I love ancient history, Dungeons and Dragons, painting, World of Warcraft, big fat novels, and Michael Jackson. My twin girls are 5, and my son is 1. It's been a blast teaching them about everything I enjoy, from reading to video games to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I was Methodist when I was a teenager, but even though I threw myself wholeheartedly into church activities, I felt like something was missing, something I couldn't put my finger on. Then I read about Joseph Smith's First Vision. It sounded crazy, but something stirred inside of me. I was fascinated, and I had to know more. A few weeks later, I finished reading the Book of Mormon, and I knelt to pray, to ask if it was for real. I felt like I was on fire, that I was being lifted up from inside my heart. In that moment, I knew, with more surety than I had ever known anything, that the Book of Mormon was true. Since that day, I've learned a lot more about the Church, and have had plenty of ups and downs. But no matter what's happened, one thing always remains the same - I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God.

How I live my faith

On Sundays, I teach Sunday School to the juniors and seniors in high school. Sometimes we get sidetracked on tangents relating to their lives, but it's a lot of fun. Right now we are studying the Old Testament, which I know can be overwhelming sometimes, so I do my best to bring it to life for them. We've had the scriptures transform from dry, repetitive verses into dynamic stories with flawed characters and both good and bad examples. Honestly, I was scared to death when I was asked to teach this class, but it's been a fantastic learning experience.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

No way. We think he's awesome because he's the one who translated the Book of Mormon and brought about the restoration of the Gospel, but we don't worship him like we do Jesus Christ. He's more like Moses. Show more Show less

What is a ward/stake/branch?

A ward is just a name for a congregation, and a stake is a whole group of congregations. A branch is like a ward, but a lot smaller and may not have all the same programs a full ward does. Show more Show less
